Online Poker Off Latest Casino Bill In Illinois
Those who support expanded gambling in Chicago are looking to make a bill the most attractive as they can to Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, who has vetoed a measure twice before. This means that any possibility of Internet poker being part of the latest version of the bill is off the table, according to reporting from the Associated Press.
Quinn reportedly said he wasn’t ready to consider Internet gambling.
One of the backers of the proposal will take out language related to Internet poker. Sen. President John Cullerton reportedly plans to push for web poker legalization in a separate bill at a later point in time. It’s unclear when.
Supporters reportedly think gambling expansion could net the state between $400 million and $1 billion a year in additional tax revenue. It’s also unclear what Internet gambling could bring, should the state ever open the cyberspace doors.
Illinois has a strong lottery, and there has been talk of allowing it to oversee the virtual casino games, should they ever be authorized by legislators. The most recent plan, though, was to let brick-and-mortar gambling operators run the intrastate industry.
Online gambling is only legal in Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware.
Thousands of new slot machines could come to the state if new casinos are authorized. The grand prize is a casino in Chicago, which would capture a huge tourist population.
